From May 2022 to October 2023, I will be based at Freiburg University as a researcher. My stay is funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and I will be conducting research on gender (particularly women) and security in Medellín, Colombia.

A publication in times of the pandemic/ Publicación en tiempos de la pandemia

It’s been over a year since my last post. I was a research fellow at Tulane University, the Latin American Library. Since then, I have continued my work on Central American asylum seekers focusing on Hondurans trying to obtain asylum mainly in the US. I have continued my work as an expert witness too.
But things have changed radically this year. The Covid -19 pandemic has altered our lives and it is hard to know if we will ever get back to normal. In this exceptional context, academics are expected to carry on with publications, teaching remotely, and other activities as if normal. Writing and publishing during a pandemic do not go together. I don’t have the same levels of concentration during these times of lockdown. I’m already a slow writer, a slow thinker; the lockdown just accentuates it more.
In this context, an article was published. I didn’t write during the pandemic; it’s a piece that I have been working on for two and a half years – three if I count the day I had the idea -as a seed- in my head. The article is from my recent research on gender and planning in Medellin, Colombia. And I tweeted how hard it was to get that research done (rejected many times at the School for Urban and Regional Planning, it found a home elsewhere). I am happy that it is finally out. The article is part of a Dossier on Material Culture and Security, edited by Frank Müller. Receiving the news of its publication during these tough times made me feel really happy. Ha pasado más de un año desde mi último post como becaria de investigación en la Universidad de Tulane en la biblioteca Latinoamericana. He continuado mi trabajo sobre centroamericanos buscando asilo, en particular el caso de hondureños buscando asilo principalmente en Estados Unidos. He seguido también escribiendo informes expertos para cortes de inmigración y testificando.
Pero las cosas han cambiado radicalmente por la pandemia del Covid-19. No sé si podremos regresar a la normalidad después de esto. En este contexto tan excepcional, se espera que los académicos sigan produciendo, escribiendo, dando clases de manera remota como si nada. Escribir y publicar durante una pandemia no van juntos. Lo más importante en estos momentos es el cuidado, el autocuidado. Personalmente, no tengo los mismos niveles de concentración.
En este contexto, salió recientemente un artículo. No lo escribí durante la pandemia, es más como recoger frutos de una idea que nació hace unos tres años. He twiteado lo difícil que fue hacer esta investigación (fue rechazada por la Escuela de Estudios Urbano-Regionales, pero el estudio encontró casa en otro lugar). Me alegra que haya salido, es un logro sin duda. El texto hace parte de un dossier de intervención sobre materialidad y seguridad, editado por Frank Müller. This is the first post this year on my website. I have been so busy at my work at the UNAL that I haven’t been able to update my website, my blog on gender and city, nothing. From September 2018 to January 2019 public universities in Colombia were on strike. The main student movements in Colombia were able to reach a deal with central government and in late January we all headed back to class. Since then, I have been focused on finishing the second term of 2018 in 2019.
The good news is that I got a fellowship to do library research. In April and May I will -I am- a research fellow at the Latin American Library @ Tulane. I will be researching gender-based violence and Honduran migration. I’ll give a talk in May based on what I have research. Will be posting soon.

Este es la primera nota este año en mi página web. He estado tan ocupada en la UNAL que no he tenido tiempo para postear novedades aquí o en mi blog sobre género y ciudad. De septiembre 2018 a enero 2019, las universidades públicas en Colombia estaban en paro. Los movimientos estudiantiles lograron llegar a un acuerdo con el gobierno nacional y a finales de enero estábamos regresando a clases. Desde entonces, he estado enfocada en terminar el segundo semestre de 2018.
Las buenas noticias es que gané una beca para realizar investigación de biblioteca. En abril y mayo seré -o soy actualmente- becaria en la Librería Latinoamericana en la Universidad de Tulane en Nueva Orleans. En mayo daré una presentación de lo que he estudiado hasta ese momento. Estaré posteando las novedades.

“Migration: Old and new patterns, old and new discourses”

Currently, there are more than 65 million persons who do not live in their country of origin. Most of them have had to move because of conflict, violence, persecution, economic collapse and political crisis, climate change and natural disasters. This high number of migrants and/or displaced persons have led some understand this situation as a global migration crisis. At the same time, this moment of largest displacement and migration on the planet has led to global policies that aim at restricting the movement of persons –for instance, South-North and South-South movement, creating obstacles in obtaining asylum, or penalizing the movement of persons with the emergence of detention centers and the massive deportation of men, women, and minors. Moreover, the massive movement of persons on the planet has led to the emergence of xenophobic attitudes, racist politics and discourses as well as attitudes against migration and immigrants. In many countries, migration has become a platform for many right and far-right groups and political parties (e.g. political campaigns in the USA, Great Britain, West and Eastern Europe as well as Latin America) which advocate for more movement restriction.
In this special edition, we invite original contributions in the social sciences that explore the long duration of migrations in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the colonial legacy of the patterns and the discourses and politics of intraregional and transregional migration. Possible areas include, but are not limited to:
- Long duration of migration patterns since the colonial period.
- Anti-migration sentiments, racism, and geopolitics from a historical and global perspective.
- Long duration of discourses of exclusion towards migrants in Latin American and the Caribbean migrating towards Europe, U.S.A. or within Latin America.
- Gender and race in global migration.
- The use of migration in political campaigns and right and far-right political parties and groups.
- Reasons for displacement or movement from the country of origin.

Objetivo de la convocatoria: Actualmente hay más de 65 millones de personas en el mundo que no viven en su país de origen. La mayoría han tenido que moverse por conflicto, violencia, persecución, colapso económico y crisis política, cambio climático y desastres naturales. Esta alta cifra de personas migrantes y/o desplazadas ha llevado algunos catalogar esta situación como una crisis global de migración. Al mismo tiempo, este momento de mayor desplazamiento y migración a nivel mundial ha generado políticas globales que buscan restringir el movimiento de personas – tanto en el movimiento sur-norte como sur-sur, obstaculizar procesos de obtención de asilo, o penalizar el movimiento con el surgimiento de centros de detención para la deportación de personas. Asimismo, el movimiento masivo de personas en el mundo ha hecho resurgir sentimientos xenofóbicos, politicas y discursos racistas y actitudes en contra de la migración y los inmigrantes, convirtiéndose en una plataforma para grupos y partidos políticos de derecha (e.g. en campañas políticas de Estados Unidos, Reino Unido hasta Europa Occidental y del Este y América Latina) para abogar por más restricción en el movimiento de personas.
En esta edición especial, invitamos contribuciones originales en las ciencias sociales que exploren la larga duración de migraciones en América Latina y el Caribe y el legado colonial tanto en los patrones como en los discursos y políticas sobre migración intraregional y transregional. Posibles áreas incluyen, pero no se limitan a:
- Larga duración de patrones migratorios desde la colonia.
- Sentimientos anti-migración, racismo y geopolitica en perspectiva histórica y global.
- Larga duración de discursos de exclusión hacia migrantes de América Latina y el Caribe hacia Europa y EE.UU, así como hacia otros países de América Latina.
- Aspectos de género y raza en la migración global.
- El uso de migración en campañas políticas de partidos de derecha.
- Factores de desplazamiento o movimiento en el país de origen.

My article about violence and migration: the case of Honduran asylum seekers
My latest article entitled, “Transnational and Local Entanglements in the ‘cycle of violence’ of Central American Migration”, was recently published in Global Crime. The article is based on my work as an expert witness for Honduran asylum seekers in the United States.

Mi artículo sobre violencia y migración: el caso de hondureños solicitando asilo
Mi último articulo en inglés titulado, “Transnational and Local Entanglements in the ‘cycle of violence’ of Central American Migration”, se ha publicado en la revista Global Crime.
El artículo se basa en mi trabajo como testigo experta para hondureños solicitando asilo en Estados Unidos y usa el concepto ‘ciclo de violencia’ de Cathy Spatz Widom para entender la continua violencia que viven muchos hondureños obligándolos a salir del país. Mi argumento es que la violencia en Centro América no es un fenómeno local, sino que hace parte de procesos transnacionales como lo son la agenda global contra el crimen y las políticas migratorias, particularmente de Estados Unidos.
